How to Clean a Kettle and Get Rid of the White Flakes

It is not dirt and it is not dangerous. It is a mineral coating that makes your kettle slower, louder and more expensive, and it comes off in an hour.

The white flakes floating in your tea are not dirt. They are limescale — the same mineral deposit that furs up a shower head — and they are not a hygiene problem.

They are, however, costing you money in a small and continuous way, and the fix takes an hour of doing nothing.

What is actually happening

Tap water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. How much depends on where you live: this is what hard water means.

When you boil water, some evaporates and the minerals it was carrying do not. They come out of solution and deposit on the hottest surface, which is the heating element or the base plate.

That has three consequences.

The kettle gets slower and more expensive. Scale is a poor conductor of heat, so it insulates the element from the water. The kettle runs longer to reach the same temperature, drawing the same power for more seconds. It is not a dramatic amount on any single boil; it is a dozen boils a day for years.

It gets louder. Steam forms in pockets under the deposit and collapses, which is the increasing rumble you may have noticed.

It eventually kills the kettle. Thermal stress on a coated element shortens its life.

None of that is urgent. All of it is avoidable.

The method

1. Fill halfway with an acid solution. Scale is alkaline, so an acid dissolves it. Either:

  • Equal parts white vinegar and water, or
  • A tablespoon or two of citric acid powder in a kettle of water — rinses out with far less smell, which is why many people prefer it, or
  • A commercial descaler, which is usually one of those two with the concentration decided for you

2. Bring it to the boil, then switch off.

3. Leave it an hour. This is where the work happens. The acid needs contact time; a solution that boils and gets tipped out immediately barely touches the deposit.

4. Pour it away and look inside. Loose flakes should wipe out with a cloth. Do not scrape.

5. Rinse and boil plain water two or three times. Do not skip this. Vinegar in the first cup of tea is unmistakable and unforgiving.

6. Repeat if needed. Heavy scale often takes two rounds, and that is better than using a stronger solution or leaving it overnight.

What not to do

Do not scrape the element. Steel wool, a knife, an abrasive pad — all of them damage the surface, and a scratched element accumulates scale faster afterwards. You would be making the next round worse permanently.

Do not boil it dry. Some people try to bake the scale off. It does not work and it can trip the dry-boil protection or damage the element.

Do not use bleach. It does nothing to mineral deposits, and it has no business in something you drink from.

Do not put a kettle in the dishwasher, electric ones especially. There is electrical equipment in the base.

Do not mix products. In particular, never combine an acid descaler with any bleach-based cleaner. That releases chlorine gas.

The outside, and the filter

Two parts people forget.

The spout filter. Most kettles have a small mesh filter behind the spout, and it is where the flakes that reach your cup are supposed to be caught. It clogs. Most pull out with a firm tug, then soak in the same acid solution and rinse. If your tea has flakes in it, this filter is probably blocked or missing.

The outside. A stainless kettle marks with fingerprints and water spots. Warm soapy water, then dry with a cloth — water left to evaporate on the outside deposits scale there too, which is what the cloudy patches are.

The base contacts, if the kettle is cordless. Wipe them dry occasionally, and never wet.

How often, and how to need it less

Hard-water area: monthly. It never gets bad enough to think about.

Soft-water area: every few months.

The honest indicator is visual. Look inside at the element or the base plate. A visible white or grey coating means it is time. Waiting for flakes in your cup means you waited too long.

And the prevention that actually works:

Empty it after use. Scale forms as water evaporates, so leaving water sitting in a warm kettle is the mechanism. Boil what you need and pour it all out.

Use filtered water if you descale constantly. A jug filter reduces mineral content noticeably and the kettle stays clean far longer.

Do not repeatedly reboil the same water. Every boil concentrates the minerals a little more.

A kettle that gets emptied after each use, in a house with a water filter, can go a long time between descalings — and the same principle handles a coffee maker, which has exactly the same problem for exactly the same reason.
